FE engines use a timing assembly very similar to other Ford engines, with the aforementioned cam thrust plate, an offset positioned dowel pin for locating, and a single central cam bolt for retention. The factory cam sprockets were often aluminum with molded nylon teeth for quieter operation. The chains were a link type with single-toothed sprockets. The steel lower sprocket has a light press fit onto the snout of the crankshaft and is located by a single keyway. All current replacement timing sets incorporate this spacer into the sprocket; the spacer, if found, should be discarded during service.
An oil slinger goes in front of the sprocket to reduce the amount of spray aimed toward the front seal.
Sprockets are accurately made, and therefore the ideal length is maintained. In my experience these have proven to be simple and reliable. Link-type timing chains are comprised of multiple side plates woven together and assembled into a chain with pressed and peened pins. The side plates themselves are in contact with the single wide teeth on each sprocket; the pins do not touch the teeth. The design is simple and quite durable, but has fallen out of favor in the performance market over the past twenty years.
Replacement sets use sprockets machined completely from iron with no plastic and thus eliminate this potential problem. Another issue faced by link-style chain systems is that the links are in contact with, and eventually wear into the sprocket teeth.
Unfortunately, imported components of questionable quality and corner cutting in both quality and manufacturing are common. Roller timing sets are the norm in high-performance applications. The ANSI chains are less expensive, and are sold with pins in. It is important to identify which chain you are using because the sprockets cannot be interchanged; the tooth profiles are different. Upon initial use, all chains stretch to an extent because of construction and function of the part.
With the notable exception of Cloyes, timing sets are generally outsourced items—sold under a marketing brand name that is often not related to the actual manufacturing source. Chains and sprockets are manufactured by numerous companies in various countries, and in a wide range of quality.
Chains can usually be identified by miniscule stampings on the links. Rolon from India is a common supplier for lower-cost sets. Sprockets can be harder to identify. Cloyes makes its own, as well as private-label parts for numerous other companies. After watching other companies set up timing systems at races,most interested professionals are familiar with the basics of race timing, but the inexperience of managing a system may create some headaches when you begin building your own system. This short guide will point you in the right direction and cut down on those headaches.
Readers - The reader will scan tags as they cross checkpoints and finish lines and is the brains of an RFID system. Antennas - The antenna in an RFID system serves as the crucial piece that communicates information between tags and the reader. Antennas can be categorized by their frequency, usage indoor or outdoor, mounting type, and polarization. Race participants will wear one to two tags, either on their bib, ankle, or shoe, depending on the tagging method.
Connector type, length, and insulation rating are all very important considerations when determining which cables are right for your system. Server - A server hosts your software and stores all of the RFID data coming in from your race timing system.
Timing Software - The software processes information and tracks time stamps of participants during races. If you are building your own solution, you will need to have knowledge of software development, or have a software developer build your ideal software solution.
Reader manufacturers provide a software development kit, or SDK, that can be a good starting point when constructing your custom software. If you are a software engineer or have hired a programmer, you can choose from several popular RFID readers:.
If you wish to avoid integrating with the reader, Impinj offers software that can read RFID tags and output data in various formats e. USB readers can connect directly to a PC and have short range antennas so that only the desired tag is encoded. There are several different types of antennas, so it is important to choose one that is rugged enough to withstand the demanding conditions of a race. Rugged antennas are generally rated IP 67, which indicates that they can be used outdoors in case of rain or high humidity.
There are two different types of antennas used in race timing, panel antennas and mat antennas. Panel antennas are mounted on a tripod or truss at the finish line, while mat antennas lay on or near the finish line for runners to cross over. The type of antenna you choose depends on your specific race, especially the width of the finish line and the number of participants.
Some timers use both types of antennas for their races to ensure reads are captured from multiple angles. Depending on your hardware configuration and the set-up of your system on race day, the RFID cables you need will vary in terms of length, insulation rating, and connector types.
It is important to ensure that cables are not an afterthought as using the wrong cables can lead to a high amount of loss in power, resulting in missed tag reads. As a cable becomes longer, it will experience more loss. You can combat that loss by using a higher level of insulation for the cable. There are three main levels of insulation:, and The higher the insulation rating, the less energy will be lost; however the cables will also be thicker and less pliable, which could be a problem for some race timers.

With minor changes it can be modified to cope with cycling or triathlons or many other race types. Unlike other online chip timing guides, which tend to leave out a lot of the important details, this one includes everything needed, including software, to create a working chip timing system.

What's described is the system designed for the North East Harrier League during This is a cross country league in the North East of England, run over 7 meetings during winter.
Each meeting has 10 races covering male and female, under 11 to senior, and each race consists of 30 to runners. A total of runners take part at each meeting. The races are handicapped so runners tend to finish more bunched than in a normal race of similar distance. The peak finish rate of the largest race is around 90 runners per minute and the system copes well with that.
You can see the typical results from a single meeting here. The system was introduced into the league as the main timing system in early to replace the usual manually recorded and timed results. It has worked very well since then removing the need for 16 officials and 3 race admin and getting results online within minutes of the race finishing, sometimes during the race.

Main components To show how little you need to make a working chip timer, here is a view of a single antenna chip timer opened out from its case and labelled. The only addition you need is a tripod to mount the antenna on and an optional camera as backup, which would be mounted on the same tripod.

Some versions of the reader have 2 antenna ports and other readers have up to 8 antenna ports, but you won't need that many. The tablet shown will run for 6 hours from its own internal battery and the Lithium battery shown will run the chip reader for 10 hours so the system can be setup before the meeting and be left unattended for the meeting duration, which is about 4 hours for this particular cross country.

A Guide to Building Your Own Race-Timing System
That, with some electrical tape to snug it up in a cleaned out spark plug threaded body. More tape on the indicator, just one or two raps, and it's pretty tight. I've seen an indicator with a one inch diameter face that looked ideal for in frame clearance. Just the weight of the gauge was enough to hold it against the tube but I added the tape just because. A tap and screw is more proper, but I ain't that way, so far. Every day above ground is a good one. The one I linked to earlier will fit a 2" diameter indicator on an RD, but it's tight.
Not Homemade, but I've used this little gem with great results. You don't even have to remove the tank. Can't seem to locate the eBay listing where I purchased it, but it's identical to the "Buzzetti Micrometer Timing Tool". So I'm sure if you hunt around you can find one cheaper.
